There has been a long felt need for appropriate recreation facilities for the many thousands of New York City children who are disable .No such facilities are presently available. Recognizing the need, the City has set aside $100,000 from its first federal Community Development Block Grant to design such a playground. It will be the first public playground in the nation specifically designed for the integrated recreational enjoyment of children with disabilities as well as ablebodied youngsters.

The concept for this kind of playground as well as other issues concerning accessibility evolved from discussions with representatives of various oranizations concerned with the problems of the disabled. These discussions led to the formal establishment, in September of 1974, of a unit in the Department of City Planning to coordinate work on programs for persons with disabilities.
